ORCA Members Help Kick Off 2023 Vancouver Island Race Series

On Sunday, January 8th, ORCA had a small but mighty contingent at the first race of the 2023 Vancouver Island Race Series. ORCA runners Shawn Petraschuk, Chris Greenway, and Dianne Darte made their way from Oceanside to Sidney and joined a total of 619 participants to make the 2023 edition of the Harriers Pioneer 8k one of its biggest showings in its history! As the world comes out the global Covid pandemic, it’s a delight to see the events we cherish not only coming back but also flourishing.

Despite the dreary day—exactly what you’d expect in January, of course—there was no dampening the spirits of this motivated group of athletes. Energy at the start line was high, and was carried right through to the finish as soaked racers chased personal bests, new goals, and more.

Have you ever participated in an organized race or race series? There are still 7 races to go in this series with the next up being the Cobble Hill 10k and there absolutely isn’t a more welcoming environment. Whether it’s to join in with your fellow ORCA racers or to meet like-minded folks who enjoy the same hobby as yourself, the Vancouver Island Race Series is a fantastic set of events that helps kick off each and every year with enthusiasm. From race to race, you’ll see many smiling and familiar faces that will lift your spirits when you line up at each and every start.

It’s not too late to sign up for one race or the rest of them all and join your fellow ORCAs from Parksville and Qualicum Beach in friendly competition. You can find more information on the Vancouver Island Race Series website, and we hope to see more of you at the next race!
