The Ken Owen Award is presented annually to the Team ORCA member voted “most inspirational” by their teammates.
The award was created by Mike Bourcier and Michele Levesque to commemorate Ken Owen (pictured to the right), a long-time member of Team ORCA who passed away in 2005. Ken was a great friend to Team ORCA, and loved running, triathlons, and the camaraderie of his running friends.
The recipient of this award is chosen for his or her “INSPIRATION” to other members of ORCA. The criteria for the award is that it is to be given to the person who, through his/her dedication, tenacity, comeback, etc. has been an inspiration to us all.
This year’s recipient has been described as humble, enthusiastic, quick to respond to club needs and often creatively thinking of new ideas to benefit us all as a group.
The most inspirational Orca member for 2020 raised our spirits along with her own, by encouraging members to pursue a virtual half marathon…complete with awards designed and provided at her own expense.
Regardless of the challenge, Penny goes the extra kilometers, far beyond the role and responsibilities as Membership Director. Thank You Penny!
Jill raced a total of 7 races in spite of Covid and placed first in six of them. She ran her first half marathon at the Goodlife Fitness in Victoria and placed 3rd in her age division
Other accomplishments included setting an age division course record for the Port Alberni Paper Chase 15k and winning the individual age group standings for the Island Series by completing 5 of the 8 possible races in first place.

At this AGM several important issues will be discussed including the upcoming Mother’s Day Race Events, the Learn to Run Program and future Club and Donation Funding. These events and programs are the financial mainstay of our “Charitable Society”. They provide the necessary funding for our Society’s yearly operations and Charity Donations. Discussion of our current financials will be an AGM Agenda item this year.
As well, our continued functioning as a Charitable Society requires a club Executive and many volunteers to see to the yearly operations. We need you and your involvement. Please don’t assume that someone else will do it!
Your voice is important to this Executive. We need and welcome your input and discussion of these and other topics for the upcoming ORCA year at our 2020 AGM.
“Orca Tee shirts have finally arrived. The new colour this year is “Ultra Blue”. We have a variety of sizes available for both men and women with your choice of one logo only (on the front left lapel) or two logos (the second being on the back of the Tee). Team ORCA is truly saddened not to be celebrating Mother’s Day with you in person or celebrating your race day goals at the 2020 Oceanside Mother’s Day Race. First and foremost, we hope you are staying healthy during these uncertain times.
We would like to extend our deep gratitude to the health care and front line workers for their commitment to community during this pandemic.
Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the Oceanside Mother’s Day Race Committee and the Oceanside Running Club Association (ORCA) have cancelled the Sunday May 10, 2020 race. Racers, volunteers and sponsors will receive an email from the organizers.
Thank you for your patience during this time. We feel it is the right and necessary thing to do for the safety of all and doing our part to stop the spread of the virus.
All entries received by January 15 will be entered into a prize draw.
If you plan to register for the Learn to Run Program either as a new participant or a repeat from a previous year, simply register for Learn to Run only. It includes an ORCA membership. Registration for that will be opening soon.
